Abstract

Thin films of LiCoO2 or LiMg0.05Co 0.95O2 were prepared by dipping technique on a cathode body Ni/NiO in order to protect them against dissolution in Molten Carbonate Fuel Cells (MCFC). Ni plates were always initially oxidized by heating at 550°C under the dead load of the ceramic plates in order to avoid waving. Then the substrates have been dipped in Li+-Co2+(Mg 2+) acetate-ascorbate sols diluted with ethanol, in order to receive layers -1μm. The covered substrates were calcined at 650°C similarly as Ni-plates. The presence of LiCoO2 in a deposited coating has been proved by EDS patterns. The resultant film thicknesses were measured by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) on the fractured cross-sections. Cathode bodies covered with LiCoO2 are practically completely prevented from dissolution of Ni in a molten K/Li electrolyte (NiO solubility value less than 1 mol ppm). Dissolution of LiCoO2 coating was not observed as well. SEM observations did not show any remarkable changes in microstructure and morphology of the covered cathodes in molten electrolyte.
